Why does my internet sometimes appear to be coming from another country? #
When using an AdventureSIMs eSIM, you may occasionally notice websites, apps, or online services think you’re located in a different country than where you’re physically travelling.
For example, you might be travelling in Japan but a website shows prices in Singapore dollars, displays content in another language, or identifies your IP address as being from a different country.
This is completely normal and is a standard part of how many global mobile networks operate.
What is traffic routing? #
Traffic routing is the process mobile networks use to connect your device to the internet.
To provide reliable coverage across multiple countries, many travel eSIM providers (including AdventureSIMs) work with international network partners. As part of this process, your internet traffic may be routed through secure network infrastructure located in another country before reaching the wider internet.
This is similar to how international roaming works when using your home mobile provider overseas.
Is my data secure? #
Absolutely.
Traffic routing is a standard telecommunications practice used by mobile operators worldwide. Your connection remains protected by the same security measures used across modern mobile networks.
AdventureSIMs does not sell your personal data, and traffic routing does not give third parties access to your private information.
Why do I sometimes see a foreign IP address? #
An IP address is simply the internet address assigned to your connection.
Because some of our network partners allocate IP addresses from their own infrastructure, your device may occasionally appear online as if it’s located in another country.
This does not mean your connection is being monitored, redirected, or compromised. It’s simply how the network identifies your connection to the internet.
What effects can this have? #
Most travellers will never notice any difference.
In some cases, however, you may experience:
- Websites displaying prices in a different currency
- Search results from another region
- Ads relevant to another country
- Streaming services showing different content libraries
- Apps selecting the wrong language or region automatically
These behaviours are generally caused by the website or app relying on your IP address to determine location.
How can I fix incorrect location issues? #
If a website or app isn’t recognising your location correctly, try:
- Manually selecting your preferred language
- Updating your country or region settings within the app
- Choosing your preferred currency on shopping websites
- Closing and reopening the app
- Restarting your device
- Refreshing your network connection by toggling Airplane Mode on and off
Does this happen on every AdventureSIMs eSIM? #
Not necessarily.
Traffic routing depends on the specific network, country, and carrier partnerships associated with your eSIM. Some plans use local routing, while others may route traffic through regional network hubs.
This can vary between destinations and may change over time as network partners update their infrastructure.
